✨ Cradle of Humankind & Discovery Site of 'Lucy'
Hadar is one of the world's most significant paleoanthropological sites, located in the badlands of the Lower Awash Valley within the Afar Depression. It gained international fame on November 24, 1974, when paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson and his team discovered the 3.2-million-year-old fossilized skeleton of "Lucy" (Australopithecus afarensis, known locally as Dinkinesh, meaning "you are marvelous"). The site consists of sedimentary rock layers rich in ancient fossils spanning millions of years. Hadar has yielded hundreds of hominin fossil specimens, including the "First Family" collection, offering fundamental insights into early human evolution, bipedalism, and the prehistoric environment of East Africa.
