✨ 19th-century royal palace
Built in the 1880s atop the strategic Jiren hill by King Abba Jifar II, this palace served as the administrative and cultural seat of the autonomous Gibe Oromo Kingdom of Jimma. The historic compound incorporates traditional southwestern Ethiopian woodcraft blended with Indo-Arab architectural elements, featuring a two-story main residence, a royal court, residential quarters, and mosques. It stands approximately 7 kilometers north of modern Jimma city at an elevation of around 2,000 meters, which historically offered commanding defensive views and protection from lowland diseases.
