✨ Sacred Island Sanctuaries of Lake Tana
Lake Tana, Ethiopia's largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile, is home to 37 islands and peninsulas, over 20 of which shelter historic Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo monasteries dating from the 14th to the 17th centuries. Located near Bahir Dar, these remote, thatch-roofed circular churches served as safe havens for religious treasures and imperial crowns during times of conflict. Accessible by boat, the monasteries are famous for their vibrant interior wall paintings, ancient parchment Bibles, and sacred relics.
