✨ Prehistoric Stone Tool Haven, Fossil Hominid Site & UNESCO World Heritage Site
Melka Kunture is a globally significant Paleolithic cluster of archaeological and paleontological sites located in the Upper Awash Valley, about 50 km south of Addis Ababa. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2024 alongside nearby Balchit, the site preserves continuous records of human activity spanning over 2 million years—from the Early Stone Age Oldowan and Acheulean tool cultures to the Middle and Late Stone Ages. Excavations along the banks of the Awash River have unearthed thousands of obsidian handaxes, fossilized animal remains (such as extinct elephants, hippos, and equids), and hominid fossils including Homo erectus and archaic Homo sapiens. The location also features Ethiopia's first open-air museum and a workshop site where early humans mass-produced obsidian stone tools 1.2 million years ago.
