Yemrehanna Kristos Church

Yemrehanna Kristos is an extraordinary 11th-century church built inside a massive natural basalt cave on the slopes of Mount Abuna Yosef, roughly 42 kilometers northeast of Lalibela. Predating the rock-hewn monoliths of Lalibela by about 80 years, it was built—rather than carved—by the Zagwe Priest-King Yemrehanna Kristos. Constructed in classic Aksumite style with alternating layers of timber-framing and whitewashed stone, the interior features pristine carved wooden ceilings, intricate geometric doors, and preserved frescoes.
